Westermann Motorsport, or Wesmo as they also like to be known, are a very interesting company in the world of Caterhams. Situated in Kuppenheim in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, near the country’s south western border with France, Wesmo was started by Joachim Westermann in 1992.

Very successful behind the wheel in Sevens since the mid 90s, and still competitively driving today as far as I can make out, his company develops components for upgrading Sevens, especially race cars, and have workshop services to support their in-house and customer cars for both race and road.

Interestingly, they also acquired Cosworth’s Duratec business in 2018, and continued to work with Cosworth after that to jointly develop a bespoke 2.4L motor to use in Seven race cars, based on the 2.5L 4-cyl Duratec block that Cosworth used to create their own crate motor. It’s really great that while Cosworth haven’t continued that engine lineage themselves, it still carries on in Wesmo’s capable hands.

They do a lot more than just engines and other powertrain components, including a line of bespoke body parts made out of a variety of composite materials including multiple carbon fibre weaves and a carbon-kevlar mix, a customised Drexler differential that they believe they’ve setup perfectly for Sevens that go racing, and the amazing BBS wheels that I mentioned when I was writing about the first modifications I have planned out for the car.

The reason I wanted to write about them is not to point out all the ways a Seven owner can very easily relieve themselves of large piles of money by shopping with them, but to mention that they’re incredibly helpful if you do contact them for help and advice about what you’re interested in.

If you place an enquiry with them about any of their products, you’ll likely end up on the desk of a Westermann employee called Carsten Drechsler. When I first reached out about availability of a particular carbon fibre part they didn’t seem to have available any more, Carsten guided me through the specification and order process for one, which they were happy to make for me and tailored to my Seven and my bespoke requirements.

He pays particular care and attention to the visual look of the parts that they sell, making sure they’re going to look good on your particular car. For example, he made sure that when selecting the gold centres for the wheels that they’d look good on the car both in the colour my car currently is, and the colour I will possibly paint the car in the future. He also made sure that when ordering two different sets of carbon fibre parts, and even with the orders separated by several weeks, that I selected the same carbon fibre weave for the part in the second order as the parts in the first, so they’d match.

Westermann would make more money to leave my choice alone because that particular weave is more expensive, yet Carsten helped spot the mismatch to the parts in my first order and corrected things for me.

He’s also been excellent in guiding me through the process of ordering parts for delivery to me here in the UK, shipped from their headquarters in Kuppenheim. With the UK no longer in the European Union, the tax implications of VAT are more complicated than they used to be. Carsten helped me navigate that, correcting a VAT issue on the separate order for the BBS wheels, and explaining how it would work from a VAT perspective if I were to take my car to them in Germany for some workshop services, and then have the car come back into the UK with new parts fitted.

That piece of mind is very valuable to me, knowing that if I work with them on a particular set of changes or parts for my car, that I’m going to get what I need, tailored to my requirements and the existing state of the car, and to the history of other things I’ve bought from them to put on the car in the past.
